"I worked at X Phone Company. Why can't I bridge that time?"

The Local gets a lot of questions regarding the bridging of service. Many bargaining suggestions were submitted regarding this subject as well but were either rejected by the Company outright or withdrawn by CWA over the course of bargaining due to conflicts over language or concept.

The main obstacle we face in getting the Company to agree to any additional bridging of service is because their obligations to us as Represented Employees are defined by the Divestiture Interchange Agreement, the Pension Portability Act and the Mandatory Portability Agreement, all written in 1984. More details can be found by clicking here.

Obviously it benefits all our members to get them the maximum amount of service we can possibly negotiate but the Company has been unwilling to bend beyond the requirements imposed upon them by the law. It is also important to remember that all of the contracts we enforce have some provision that recognizes the law over any language we negotiate. This is why it is so important to get involved politically.

Recently AT&T asked the FCC to let them out of the landline business because they couldn't possibly afford to build out broadband access as mandated by the FCC and keep up with wireline maintenance. What they failed to state is that the same broadband access lines ride the very same network as the wirelines. These wirelines provide our employment. What AT&T doesn't want to "afford" is us. This action by AT&T could mean you losing more than 50% of your pay or losing your job completely. Poverty doesn't have a political party so let your elected representatives know RIGHT NOW that you will not stand for this.
